I Timothy 2:1-2 NIV  ” I urge then, first of all that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people – kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. “

We may find it difficult to pray for leaders with whom we totally disagree with their conduct, decisions and actions. However, the Bible does not say only pray for those in authority with whom we agree. It is easy to get consumed by politics and to be enveloped into an “us vs them” mentality.

Ephesians 6:12 offers a reminder about where the real battle unfolds and its spiritual. It is not a battle of flesh and blood, but one that is spiritually rooted.

The NIV reads “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

One prayer might be, “Lord heal our land from the chaos, bad division, and please help every leader to seek your face”. In addition, include a command to bind Satan and his minions as they are working feverishly against everything Christian.

Writing this article has been good for me in that I am reminded to bring our political situation before the Lord with more intensity instead of shaking my head in disgust at the things I read or hear that are going on. We are called to be salt and light.

In addition, while we are to love and be devoted to our beloved country, we well remember our patriotism is to Jesus, the King of all the earth. Our allegiance is to Him. We are exiles and sojourners. I Peter:2:11 We are to witness to His eternal saving power wherever we have the opportunity.

Of course, there is a place to support candidates for office after thought, prayer and study of the platform on which they are running.

Join my me in my renewed resolve to storm the gates of heaven on behalf of our country and its leaders.
